Centre for Gender Equity and Equality 
Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine
The Centre for Gender Equity and Equality (CGEE) of Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine is established to promote a safe, inclusive, and gender-just university environment. The Centre is committed to advancing gender equity and equality through education, research, policy support, and community engagement, in alignment with national policies, University Grants Commission guidelines, and international best practices.

CGEE serves as a focal point for gender sensitisation, prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, and the mainstreaming of gender perspectives within teaching, learning, research, and administrative practices of the University. The Centre facilitates awareness programmes, capacity-building initiatives, academic discourse, and evidence-based interventions that uphold dignity, respect, and equal opportunities for all members of the university community.

Through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the Centre strives to foster institutional accountability, empower students and staff, and contribute to broader societal transformation towards gender equity and social justice.

To create an academic environment that promotes gender equity and equality,respects diversity, and ensures safety, dignity, and equal opportunities for all.

Mission

To mainstream gender-responsive policies, practices, and attitudes across GWUIM through advocacy, education, capacity building, and effective response mechanisms.

Objectives

  • To promote gender-sensitive attitudes and practices among students, academic, and non-academic staff.
  • To prevent and respond effectively to incidents of sexual and gender-based violence.
  • To review and recommend gender-responsive policies and institutional reforms.
  • To conduct gender sensitization programs, workshops, and training sessions.
  • To integrate gender studies and perspectives into curricula and research.
  • To collaborate with national and international organizations working on gender equity and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Raise awareness among the University Community on gender-related concepts and matters.
  • Providing training on gender equity and equality.
  • Identify ways and means to prevent gender inequality, inequity, and gender-based violence and ragging at the GWUIM.
  • Empower the university community to prevent and respond to gender inequality, inequity,and gender-based violence and ragging by developing relevant skills.
  • Inquiring about sexual and gender-based violence and ragging, and proposing to university councils for disciplinary actions to offenders, and facilities to victims.
