Anti-Ragging Workshop Conducted in Compliance with Supreme Court Directives
The Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM) successfully conducted a Workshop on the Order of Court on Framing Guidelines to Combat Ragging in State Universities on 19 February 2026.
The programme was organized by the Center of Gender Equity and Equality (CGEE) under the direction of Dr. N. S. Abegunasekara, Director, CGEE, in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment SCFR 216/2020 dated 09 July 2025. The judgment mandates all State Universities to establish structured and effective mechanisms to prevent and address incidents of ragging within higher educational institutions.
The workshop was graced by the Vice-Chancellor of GWUIM and was attended by Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments, Proctors, academic staff members, administrative officers, student counsellors, and student representatives.
The Resource Person for the programme was Professor Prathibha Mahanamahewa, Rector of the Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo. He delivered a comprehensive and insightful presentation outlining the legal framework governing anti-ragging measures, institutional responsibilities arising from the Court Order, compliance requirements, and the importance of proactive preventive strategies.
The interactive discussions that followed emphasized the shared responsibility of the entire university community in fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive academic environment. Participants actively engaged in dialogue regarding implementation mechanisms, reporting procedures, and strengthening institutional accountability.
Through this initiative, GWUIM reaffirmed its firm commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and to upholding student welfare, equity, and discipline in alignment with national legal directives and university regulations.
The University extends its sincere appreciation to the Resource Person and all participants for their valuable contributions in making this workshop a meaningful and successful programme.
