The Department of Indigenous Health Sciences, Faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology, proudly organized the Curtain Raiser Event of the International Day of Yoga 2026 in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, High Commission of India, Sri Lanka, on 16 June 2026 at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine under the theme “Yoga for Human Flourishing and World Harmony.”
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Ms. C. S. Ramya, Second Secretary, High Commission of India, Sri Lanka, together with the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor Wasantha Subasinghe; Dean, Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, Professor Priyani Peiris; Dean, Faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology, Dr. Jithya Wijesinghe; Head of the Department of Indigenous Health Sciences, Dr. Harini N. De Zoysa; Registrar, Mr. B. A. N. Krishantha; Bursar, Mr. C. G. Kothalawala; Acting Librarian, Dr. R. D. Ananda Tissa as well as academic staff, administrative staff, non-academic staff, university students, and school students.
The celebration highlighted the timeless value of yoga as a holistic discipline that promotes physical well-being, mental harmony, spiritual development, and a balanced lifestyle. The programme featured an inspiring keynote address by Mr. Vyasah Kalyanasunderam, who emphasized the significance of yoga in promoting individual well-being, inner peace, and global harmony. Participants also actively engaged in a practical yoga session conducted by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.
The event brought together more than 100 participants, including university students, school students, academic staff, administrative staff, and non-academic staff, creating a vibrant platform to celebrate the universal values of yoga and its contribution to holistic health, harmony, and sustainable well-being.
