"Mataka Wruksha" Project

The Gampaha Siddhayurveda Vidyalaya was established according to the noble concept of Ayurvedic Chakravarti Pandit G.P. Wikramarachchi. Over several decades of dedicated national service, this institution has transformed into the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine, housing the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. In 2029, the institution will celebrate its proud centenary. As the initial step toward this 100 years celebration, on March 29, 2025, a tree planting project named "Mataka Wruksha" was organized at Wikum Uyana premises to commemorate the 50th death anniversary of the late Pandit G.P. Wikramarachchi. This project, which aims to plant selected indigenous trees with medicinal value, was organized by the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine in collaboration with the Language Association of the Department of Languages and Siya Suwaya Project.

The next step of this “Mataka Wruksha” Project involves the plan to plant one million saplings across schools, government institutions, and herbal gardens nationwide by 2029.As the first phase of the tree planting program, 100 suitable medicinal plant saplings will be planted in the Wikum Uyana premises on March 29, 2025.

The event was attended by approximately 35 students, senior lecturers from the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, as well as distinguished guests including Professor Ranjana Wickrema Seneviratne, Vice Chancellor of Gampaha Wikramarachchi University; Professor (Mrs.) K.P.P. Peiris, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine; and Dr. (Ms.) W.J. Wickramarachchi, former Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine. Their participation added great value to the occasion, underscoring the significance of preserving indigenous knowledge and traditions.
