Visit by Academics from Jinan University, Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China

A delegation of medical and research professionals from Jinan University, China, visited the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine (GWUIM) this week to explore collaborative opportunities in the fields of herbal product research, medicinal plant development, and product innovation.

The team, led by the Head of the College of Pharmacy accompanied by senior academics and research specialists representing pharmaceutical sciences and natural product research engaged in discussions with a panel of representatives of GWUIM, headed by the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Health Sciences and Technology, Director of GWIC, Director of the UBL, Head and academic members of the Department of Indigenous Medical Resources. Some of the key areas of focus included:

• Joint research and development on herbal materials and medicinal plants

• Collaboration in scientific validation of traditional medicinal formulations and advanced study on natural compounds

• Exploration of pathways for commercialization of herbal and plant-based products

• Student and staff mobility programs to strengthen academic ties between the two institutions

Both parties expressed strong mutual interest in establishing a long-term partnership that integrates traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with the institutions agreeing to develop a future collaboration based on the formal framework established between China and Sri Lanka.

Mr. Ajith D. Perera Chair/Executive Secretary of APTA CCI - Asia Pacific Trade Agreement Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also present at the meeting is acknowledged for initiating the bond between Jinan University and GWUIM. We look forward to building a meaningful and impactful academic relationship which will ultimately contribute to the advancement of herbal medicine research both locally and internationally.
