The service industry and its culture represent a continuously expanding and high-demand field of employment worldwide. A primary objective within this sector is to deliver optimal consumer satisfaction while ensuring the right value for money. Achieving this requires precise management and operation of service-based industries. Therefore, some compelling reasons why the demand for Service Management is on the rise are:
● Transition from manufacturing-based economies to service-based economies.
● Increasing value on consumer experiences and personalized services.
● Expansion of service offerings across borders leading to more advanced service management scenarios that require expertise in global service strategies.
● Applicability of the skills learned through a service management degree programme across diverse service industries such as hospitality, technology and finance.

In the Sri Lankan context, the highest contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the highest employed population are recorded in the service sector. Now, services have become the source of sustainable and strategic competitive advantage rather than competition on the basis of physical products. Hence, it is vital to manage and regulate the resources of every public and private service-oriented organization. However, there is currently no undergraduate degree program designed to fulfill this requirement in the Sri Lankan higher education sector, although service management is an academic qualification in higher global demand. The primary objective of introducing the Bachelor of Science Honours in Service Management is to produce competent and knowledgeable business graduates with managerial skills in the understanding of business and the service industry, along with analytical and problem-solving skills to apply that knowledge in a dynamic business environment.
