This Programme
The Department of Indigenous Social Sciences of the Faculty of Indigenous Social Sciences and Management Studies offers a 4-year, full time Bachelor of Science Honours in Social Studies in Indigenous Knowledge degree programme. This unique, four-year multidisciplinary honours degree programme has been carefully designed along the Humanities and Social Science subject pillars: Sociology, Geography, Anthropology, Indigenous Knowledge, Social Research, Soft Skills and Management. The combined and applied knowledge gained from these subject pillars is expected to enhance not only technical and theoretical competencies of the graduate but also their values as well as, critical and creative thinking ability.
This degree programme offers opportunities for transferable skills and personality development through:
• Integrated Learning Portfolio – embedded into the degree programme students are required to keep a journal of their growth as an individual in terms of personality and skill development
• Community Projects – each student is required to organise/coordinate at least one community service initiative during their time as an undergraduate (the students have so far conducted over 100 community service projects through voluntary work all across Sri Lanka led by the Student’s Union).
• Pre-Academic Workshop Series for Second Year Students – each year as the first-year students enter the second year they are given a week of comprehensive training on academic writing, professionalism, writing a project proposal etc. in preparation for their community work.
• Professional Development Workshop Series for Final Year Students - each year as the third-year students enter the final year they are given a series of sessions to prepare them for their professional futures. This includes preparing for postgraduate studies, opportunities abroad, preparing for the internship

In addition to actively contributing to the achievement of sustainable development objectives, this programme will train students to seek answers to ongoing socio-cultural and economic issues at the national and international levels. Further, students are provided with practical application of both indigenous and western thought through frequent field work, practical activities and an internship integrated into this degree programme.
