Hands-on Training Workshop on Emergency Care Management (Basic Life Support - BLS) – 2025
Academic Year: 2021/2022

04th and 10th May 2025

The Hands-on Training Workshop on Emergency Care Management (Basic Life Support - BLS) was conducted on the 04th and 10th of May 2025, from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. This workshop was organized by the Clinical Simulation Training Center, under the guidance of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, GWUIM. The sessions were held at the Clinical Simulation Training Center located at the Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage Central Laboratory Building and the Student Center, GWUIM. In response to the increasing need for emergency care knowledge among future healthcare professionals, this workshop was specifically designed to provide essential, lifesaving BLS training to the 20th BAMS Undergraduate Batch (Academic Year 2021/2022).
 
The programme was successfully conducted under the guidance and supervision of Dr. D.P.C.R. Karunarathne, ERC BLS Course Director, ERC BLS/ALS Instructor, European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and Instructor, Sri Lanka Resuscitation Council with the dedicated contributions of Dr. N.A.M.L. Nissanka, Acting Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Teaching Hospital Polonnaruwa, MD in Emergency Medicine, University of Colombo conducted an awareness programme with practical training sessions in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, Airway management and choking relief, Advanced Life Support (ALS), Recognition and management of respiratory emergencies (e.g., asthma, anaphylaxis). Assessment and treatment of cardiac emergencies (e.g., heart attack, cardiac arrest) and recovery position and Teamwork and Communication: Strategies for effective communication, role clarity, and coordination among healthcare providers in emergency settings.
 
This initiative follows the successful implementation of a similar workshop for the 2020/2021 Academic Year – Level V / Semester II, led by Dr. Nilmini Wijesuriya, Chair of the Sri Lanka Resuscitation Council, and Dr. Muditha Nissanka, Senior Registrar in Emergency Medicine, National Hospital, Colombo. Building on that success, the 2025 workshop continued to emphasize hands-on, practical training for effective emergency response. This workshop successfully provided the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively respond to emergency situations and provide basic life-saving care to academics and undergraduates.
