The University Research Council is established as a Senate Standing Committee in terms of Section 46(6)(vii) of the Universities Act.
Objective
The objective of establishing the University Research Council is to promote and foster research in the field of Indigenous Medicine within the University with a view to make a significant contribution towards knowledge enhancement and natural development by encouraging the staff at various stages of their career and disseminating research findings.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Council
• Provide strategic research direction to the University through the development of effective research policies.
• Coordinate all research activities in the University.
• Spearhead resource mobilization initiates to ensure that the research policy mandate is met.
• Provide necessary guidelines and advice to academic staff for carrying out research and disseminating research findings.
• Provide mechanisms for monitoring research.
• Foster the development of Faculty research proposals linked to the undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
• Ensure the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the University research agenda and encourage preparation and publishing reports and research journals/ magazines etc.
• Ensure compliance by researchers with research ethics.
• Develop links and facilitate partnerships with international and local research funding agencies to secure support for collaborative research.
• Arrange and facilitate programmes for capacity building in proposal writing, research methodology and statistical analysis in liaison with Staff Development Centre and other external agencies Design and initiate appraisal and reward systems for excellence in research and development.
