Lahiru Wijesinghe

Bachelor of Science Honours In Social Studies In Indigenous Knowledge
(2020/2021 Batch)
Faculty of Indigenous Social Sciences & Management Studies

  1. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Lahiru Wijesinghe, and I am currently in the 4th year of study at the Faculty of Indigenous Social Sciences and Management Studies at Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine.

  2. What motivated you to apply for your course at GWUIM?

When I was going through the UGC University Admissions book, I noticed a new course which was about indigenous knowledge. Considering the course content, the vision and the mission of this university, I wanted to select this course and the university for my future path.

  3. What do you think of your course?

This course offers understanding on Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, and Indigenous Knowledge. This multidisciplinary combination provides a university student the necessary knowledge and understanding of both local and global contexts. It gives subject knowledge as well as indigenous qualities and values as well. The world already has many academics who are competent on the subjects, but there is a considerable vacuum in terms of the people who have subject knowledge with the right values and attitudes. In the future, this course will fill this vacuum.

  4. How would you describe the guidance you've received?

With the beginning of our university journey, we received good support and guidance from our academics. They helped us to improve the subject knowledge beyond the course subjects as well as skills and attitudes. And that should be appreciated as a final year student who experienced all these things from the beginning of this course.

  5. How would you describe your experience at FISSMS?

With the beginning of our university journey, we received good support and guidance from our academics. They helped us to improve the subject knowledge beyond the course subjects as well as skills and attitudes. And that should be appreciated as a final year student who experienced all these things from the beginning of this course.

  6. Have you been involved in extra-curricular activities? If so, what have you gained out of these experiences?

When I reflect back to my university journey, I am very proud. I started as a deputy batch representative, was elected as the Vice President of the Students’ Union, and elected as the President of the Leo Club of Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine – FISSMS and recently I was elected as the President of the Lions Club of Colombo Pioneers (this club is a place for the dedicated volunteers at GWUIM – FISSMS Leo Club members to further enhance their skills and experiences). Recently, I was also appointed as the Country Leader of the University Student Ambassador Special Volunteer Service of the University Student Ambassador National Programme on Child Protection at the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA).
